ABOUT THIS POSITIONWe are seeking a Technical Manager, Data Engineering, to lead and scale Waystar’s data engineering function while actively contributing to the delivery of our modern data platform. This role combines people leadership, technical ownership, and hands-on engineering to drive execution across our BigQuery-based data platform.You will be responsible for managing a team of data engineers, setting technical directions, and ensuring the successful delivery of scalable ingestion and transformation pipelines across a Medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold) on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This leader will partner closely with platform leadership, governance, and business domains to establish a reliable, governed, and high-performing data ecosystem.WHAT YOU'LL DOTeam Leadership & Delivery OwnershipLead, mentor, and scale a team of data engineers supporting multiple business domainsDrive delivery accountability, sprint execution, and engineering best practicesEstablish development standards, code reviews, and performance expectationsManage capacity, workload balance, and resource planning across initiativesPartner with leadership to align engineering priorities with strategic goalsTechnical Leadership & ArchitectureDefine and enforce data engineering standards, patterns, and best practicesProvide hands-on technical leadership across BigQuery, dbt, and ingestion frameworksGuide architecture decisions for scalable, secure, and cost-efficient data pipelinesLead design of domain-aligned, reusable data models and pipelinesEnsure alignment with governance, data classification, and access control frameworksPipeline Engineering & Delivery (Hands-On)Design, build, and maintain ELT pipelines into BigQuery using Fivetran and custom APIsOversee and contribute to development of bronze, silver, and gold layersSupport and review dbt models, transformations, and orchestration workflowsImplement orchestration using Cloud Composer (Managed Airflow)Act as an escalation point for complex technical issues and delivery risksData Quality, Observability & GovernanceEnforce data quality, validation, and monitoring standards across pipelinesImplement logging, alerting, and observability frameworksEnsure performance optimization for BigQuery (partitioning, clustering, cost management)Enforce security best practices including IAM roles, data access, and auditabilityDrive adherence to data lineage, documentation, and governance requirementsPlatform Engineering & EnablementChampion CI/CD practices using GitHub and modern deployment pipelinesDrive Infrastructure-as-Code standards (Terraform) for platform consistencyImprove developer experience, onboarding, and engineering productivityCollaborate with Data Governance and Data Champions to enable domain ownershipWhat You’ll Need8+ years of data engineering experience with enterprise-scale platforms2+ years of experience leading or managing data engineering teamsStrong hands-on expertise with GCP and BigQueryAdvanced experience with dbt (required)Experience with Fivetran and API-based ingestion frameworksStrong Python skills including API integrations and automationProven experience building scalable ELT pipelines and data modelsExperience with data quality, validation frameworks, and observabilityProficiency with GitHub, CI/CD workflows, and code review practicesStrong understanding of data governance, lineage, and access controlsExperience working in regulated environments (e.g., healthcare) preferredWHAT YOU'LL NEEDExperience leading teams through cloud data platform migrations (e.g., Snowflake BigQuery)Experience with Terraform (IaC) and platform automationFamiliarity with Harness CI/CD and GitHub ActionsExperience with Snowflake and Azure Data Factory (ADF)Knowledge of data mesh / domain-driven data ownership modelsExperience driving engineering standards across distributed teamsABOUT WAYSTARThrough a smart platform and better experience, Waystar helps providers simplify healthcare payments and yield powerful results throughout the complete revenue cycle.Waystar’s healthcare payments platform combines innovative, cloud-based technology, robust data, and unparalleled client support to streamline workflows and improve financials so providers can focus on what matters most: their patients and communities.
